RIGHT TO DISCONNECT POLICY

Statement of Commitment

The West Egg Group Inc. is committed to allowing all employees to have the “right to disconnect” from work. Disconnecting from work at appropriate times is vital for a person’s well-being and sustaining a healthy work-life balance. Disconnecting at appropriate times also enables employees to work more productively during their actual working hours and reduces the likelihood of employee burnout. We are aware that due to advancing technology, lines may be blurred. We support each employee in disconnecting from work outside of their normal working hours, subject to reasonable expectations.

The Management team can use their own discretion and judgment with regards to after hours requests and emergency situations. The “right to disconnect” is based on current business needs with minimal disruption or interference.

Employees and Management are encouraged and expected to take their vacation time as stipulated in their employment agreement.

Definition

Disconnecting from Work: Under the Employment Standards Act, this includes not engaging in work-related communications, including emails, telephone calls, video calls or sending or reviewing other messages, to be free from the performance of work

Expectations

We will take all reasonable steps to ensure employees are able to disconnect from work when they are outside of work hours. The employee should adhere to their supervisor’s direction for reading or replying to work-related emails or answer work-related phone calls after their shift is over. Employees are expected to manage their work and work related communications during their normal working hours. They notify their supervisor if they feel any undue pressure to work or respond outside of normal working hours.

Management should use their own discretion and judgment with work-related emails and phone calls after hours.

Employees and Management can set out-of-office notifications for vacations, learning & development, absence and/or illness. Employees and Management are not expected to respond to business e-mails while out of the country or on vacation. The West Egg Group Inc. will provide vacation coverage internally to ensure that communications are minimized during these times. Employees and Management will only be contacted in emergency situations.

In rare circumstances when Management is not aware, employees may be contacted and can advise their supervisor. The Management team will clarify why the employee was contacted, for example, work-related or an investigation, the regular response time would not be expected and we will work with the impacted employee.

If the Right to Disconnect is not being adhered to, please speak with your supervisor to clarify the expectations for your position.

Working Hours

Working hours are defined in your employment agreement and with your supervisor. If any changes are required, please speak with your supervisor. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this policy, please speak to your supervisor.

Any exceptions of working outside your normal working hours would include emergency situations, unforeseen business or operational reasons, to assist or fill in at short notice for a colleague or any unusual circumstances.

The Management team can use their discretion and judgment for any overtime as required to suit the current business needs.
