FIRST AID POLICY (BC)

Intent

The West Egg Group Corp. recognizes that first aid treatment may be necessary at the workplace and that sufficient resources and procedures are required to administer it effectively. This policy outlines the standards and requirements for first aid in the workplace.

Definitions

Ambulance: An ambulance owned and operated by British Columbia Emergency Health Services or otherwise authorized to operate under the Emergency Health Services Act.

Board: Means the Workers’ Compensation Board of British Columbia, also known as WorkSafeBC.

First aid: Situations where an individual needs medical attention for preserving life and minimizing injury until medical treatment is available, and treatment of minor injuries that would not receive or do not require medical treatment.

First aid attendant: An individual who holds a valid first aid certificate issued by the board or by a person recognized by the board, and who is designated as a first aid attendant by The West Egg Group Corp.

Guidelines

To determine an adequate and appropriate level of first aid coverage, The West Egg Group Corp. prepares a written workplace first aid assessment that sets out at least the following information:

  • The number of workers present and the location of workers;
  • The nature and extent of the risks and hazards associated with the workplace;
  • The types of injuries likely to occur;
  • Any barriers that may be present if first aid must be provided to an injured worker; and
  • The timeframe required to obtain transportation and transport an injured worker to medical treatment and the methods of transportation available.

Based on this assessment and the requirements set out in the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation (OHSR), the company provides, at a minimum, the equipment, supplies, facilities, first aid attendants, and services required by the OHSR and any additional equipment, supplies, facilities, first aid attendants, and services necessary to ensure that workers who suffer an injury at work can promptly receive first aid or transportation to medical treatment. The company ensures that first aid equipment, supplies, and facilities are suitable for their intended use, are kept clean, dry, and ready for use, and are readily accessible to workers.

The company reviews and updates the assessment within 12 months after the previous assessment and whenever a significant change that may affect the assessment occurs to the company’s operations. The company prepares, reviews, and updates the first aid assessment in consultation with the Health and Safety Committee.

First Aid Procedures

The West Egg Group Corp. keeps written, up-to-date procedures for providing first aid, which are posted conspicuously throughout the workplace. The procedures include:

  • The equipment, supplies, facilities, first aid attendants, and services available;
  • The location of first aid and how to call for it;
  • How the first aid attendant should respond to a call for first aid;
  • If there are any barriers to first aid being provided to injured workers, how injured workers will be accessed and moved;
  • The authority of the first aid attendant over the treatment of first aid to injured workers;
  • The responsibility of the company to report injuries to the board;
  • Who is responsible for calling for transportation for the injured worker, and the methods of transportation and calling;
  • If the workplace is required to have emergency transportation under the OHSR, the location of the method of emergency transportation; and
  • Prearranged routes in and out of the workplace and to medical treatment.

The first aid attendant and any other individuals authorized to call for transportation for injured workers are trained on these procedures.

At least once each year, or whenever the procedures change, The West Egg Group Corp. conducts drills to ensure that the procedures are effective and that workers, first aid attendants, and all other persons authorized to call for transportation for injured workers can fulfil their roles and responsibilities.

The company also establishes an effective way of communicating between the first aid attendant and the injured workers, and for the first aid attendant to call for assistance. The first aid attendant is not assigned or permitted to engage in work that interferes with their ability to receive and respond to requests for first aid.

First Aid Records

The West Egg Group Corp. maintains records for all injuries and exposures that are reported or treated, as required by the OHSR. First aid records are kept for a minimum of three years at the workplace. The records are kept confidential unless disclosure is permitted by the OHSR or law.

Workers may request or authorize access to their first aid records for any treatment or report about themselves by contacting their direct Supervisor and/or hr@gatsbyvalet.com

First Aid Attendant

The West Egg Group Corp. ensures a designated first aid attendant:

  • Is at least 16 years of age;
  • Has a valid first aid certificate at the required level issued or recognized by the board; and
  • Is physically and mentally capable of safely and effectively performing their required duties.

First aid attendants are responsible for:

  • Promptly providing injured workers with a level of first aid within the scope of their training;
  • Objectively recording and reporting signs and symptoms of injuries and exposure to any contaminants; and
  • Referring the worker to medical treatment if the injuries are considered serious or beyond the scope of the first aid attendant’s training.

First aid attendants are responsible for providing first aid to injured workers and have full authority to do so until responsibility of treatment is accepted:

  • At a medical treatment facility;
  • By ambulance personnel; or
  • By a person with an equal or higher level of first aid certification.

First aid attendants do not have the right to overrule a worker’s decision to seek medical treatment or the worker’s choice of medical treatment.
